For our customers with Strava Premium accounts, we offer the ability to view Strava segments on your GPS device.
If you're getting an error refreshing starred segments, check HERE.
The first important item to note is that Strava restricts some segments flagged as hazardous. This is not only completely downhill segments, but also segments with uphill and downhill section that have an Average Grade below 0%, as well as some for safety based on location. Strava also limits the amount of segments that can sync to 100 (tips on managing this lower in the article).
To get started, there are a few things that have to be done entirely on the Strava-side of things. Obviously, you have to have a Strava account, but as I mentioned before, it has to be a paid Strava Analysis account. Here's a link to their article on pricing and features. You also have to star segments. Again, here's their info page on that.
Here's the steps to get everything rolling once your Strava account is ready.
- Pair your Lezyne GPS device to your Lezyne Ally v2 app.
- On the Device module in the app, select Refresh. The device will display the rides on your device.
- Navigate to the More module in the app.
- Select Strava Live Segments.
- Swipe down to pull the list of your starred segments from Strava.
- In the upper right hand corner, there's the 2 circular arrows. Select that to sync the segments to the device.
It'll pull the data from Strava first. Then, it'll send it to the device. Depending on the number of segments, the amount of time this might take can vary considerably.
- Note: Next to each segment is a box. If you don't check any boxes, the app will sync all of your starred segments to the GPS device - or the first 100 if you have more than 100 starred. If you check any boxes, it will only sync the check-boxed segments to the device. The advantage of this is that it cuts down on the amount of time it takes to load the segments to your device; 50+ segments can take quite a while.
- Additional Note: You have two options on how to sort the segments: by name or by current distance from the start of the segment. Again, the app can only sync the first 100 segments to the device. If you have more than 100 segments and you sort by distance, it will pull only those closest to you. You can use this strategically if you regularly ride in multiple locations, but you have to remember to re-sync before riding in the new location.
- Once they are synced you can tap on the individual segments to view data from Strava or change your goal from the default of your Personal Record to the KOM.
Now when you ride through the segment, it'll show your current time in the segment, the time you're trying to beat, and distance to the finish.
